I’m Bad at Blogging

A few updates on my Big Black Life

Snoopy

I always tell myself I’m going to start blogging more, then I get busy with work and other projects and that never happens. Blogging about the things I work on helps when I need to recall something I did before without trying to retrace my search steps on Google. So here I am again, saying I’m going to blog more. So, what have I been up too?

First, I recently finished two design projects that helped me realize the fact that I really don’t like designing web sites or UI. I don’t hate it, but I’m not the most creative person so it takes me longer than I would like to come up with a decent design. The thing I like the most about those projects is the actual part where I get to build the websites out and possibly try something new with JS or PHP. One of the projects I just finished has a secondary header that only appears after the user has scrolled down to a certain level of the home page. I’m thinking about implementing a sliding sidebar as well, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

I started a new project for the FGC. Working on a prototype for a system that will notify players of local tournaments and sessions going on in a specified area. I haven’t even really though much about a design for this one since I’m building the system from the ground up and need to get things like user accounts and security settled. I’m looking forward to moving forward with this project, but there is something in the way.

We’ve been having a big problem with MASH crashing over the past two weeks and come to find out it’s because of surges of traffic we have been getting. The old girl just can’t handle it anymore, so I’m currently splitting out one server into two — breaking up the roles between the new boxes. I have one box up and in production right now, the other I’m trying to harden a bit more since it will be public facing. Surprisingly thanks to changes in infrastructure pricing I will only cost me about $5 more a month to run the two boxes versus the one.

One the gaming front I’ve actually fallen back into Destiny. Pretty much play it everyday, which is funny because it’s so repetitive. It’s one of those games that you play because your friends play it, and they play it because you play it. I don’t think I’ve ever played regularly a game that frustrates me so much. I was pretty pissed with The Dark Below expansion. I though for the price you didn’t get that much content, and that the content that was added was lackluster. You get three new missions (four if you include the one you can play ONCE after you finish the urn quest), the two strikes are in places you’ve already been and are just hordes of enemies thrown at you, and the Crota raid is easy compared to VoG in my opinion. Yet, I still play the game, so I have no right to complain.

My conversion of MASH into a podcast network is moving along. We currently have three podcasts with a fourth coming soon. I recently pull some stats down for our podcasts and they are doing much better than I thought. Mashcast has been downloaded over 50,000 times in the past 90 days while WoW! Talk! has been downloaded close to 4,000 times in the past 90 days. For major podcasts that number may not be all that impressive, but for our small group those numbers sound great.

I’ll need to redesign the site (again) to better fit what we are trying to do. I have some ideas, but most of them half baked at this time so I’ll be sharing them later. I have some interesting ideas I want to try out with HTML5 audio; things I have seen anywhere else. I’m hoping they work out well, but at the very least they will be a learning experience.

I think that’s about all the updating I can do right now. Here is to hoping it’s not another few months between updates and I have something to show for it.

(P.S. I think I found a fix to that “removing base” problem with WordPress, but I just haven’t had a chance to test it. Will check it out soon.)
